Groundwater Allocation Program

With SGMA now in full effect, it’s going to take more than increasing our surface water supplies to overcome the groundwater overdraft occurring within the North Fork Kings GSA. Solving our overdraft will require both supply-side projects (bring more water in and increase recharge capacity) and demand-side solutions (a groundwater allocation to reduce demand).

What is an allocation?

In the context of the Sustainable Groundwater Management Act (SGMA), an allocation is a set amount of groundwater that is allotted, or allowed, to be pumped by landowners on a per-acre basis each year to maintain sustainable conditions.

Developing a groundwater allocation involves a combination of technical analysis, legal and regulatory guidance, and landowner engagement. Collaboration between GSA leadership and staff, technical consultants, legal counsel, and the local water users is essential for effective implementation of an allocation.

The North Forks Kings GSA invites you, our landowners and stakeholders, to engage as we plan, develop, and implement an allocation program.

As part of a larger effort to hear from our landowners, the Engage Page is solely dedicated to giving space for landowners to ask questions, share ideas, raise concerns, and provide feedback to shape the allocations process in a meaningful way. Your real-world experience as a landowner in this region is crucial; share your insights now at engage.northforkkings.org.
